Hello Folks - I am new to the forum but I need some help making a decision. I currently have an aging 63" LCoS Rear Projection TV that I am looking to replace. The new TV will be used in a great room that is 24' x 24'. The seating will be approximately 14' from the screen. I had always assumed I would by the LN52A650 because of its beautiful picture and flat screen. The Blu-Ray and 120hz performance just blow me away. Recently though I read that given my room dimensions and distance from the screen the 52" may not be big enough. With this new information in hand I went looking for something bigger. Since Samsung doesn't offer anything bigger in an LCD I took a look at the HL67A750 and wow was I impressed with the reviews. I visited my local Best Buy and the DLP looked good but they could not demonstrate the Blu-Ray 120hz performance. Now I have also read that Samsung and Mitsubishi are the only two vendors still playing in the rear projection market and 2009 may be the end of the technology completly. Not sure I want to invest in a dying technology and if it is dying won't Samsung have to replace the size with something in the LCD line? I don't know what to do folks and would appreciate any suggestions you can provide.

Thanks,

Don

For the size of your room upsizing to the 67" is not a bad idea, although it is not necessary. The 120Hz refresh rate is not a Blu-Ray attribute though, that is an LCD feature. The move from 60Hz to 120 Hz in the LCD realm is to solve the problem of motion blur that is experienced in in fast motion such as sports programs or movies with a lot of fast paced action. DLP sets will not have this limitation so do not worry about the distinction.

DLPs will have deeper blacks and an overall better picture than an LCD if you are sitting directly in their sweet spot. They tend to have a more limited viewing angle than an LCD however so you have to take into account where you will be sitting in relation to the TV. Too high, low, or to the side and all of the extra picture quality will be lost.

The only other distinction comes in the size and power usage. An LCD will give you that nice minimalist clean look that is in vogue where a DLP will still be a rear projection TV no matter how you slice it. The LCD will also use less power, but really is that an issue? You might want to look into a Plasma for a larger size with a slimmer profile.

i bought the samsung 61" dlp projection and ended up taking it back. the difference between projection and lcd/plasma is night and day. i went with the 52" and i have about the same size room as you. projection just can't compete. viewing angle was horrible. hope this helps.

I am a fan of LCD or Plasma over DLP, but there are some that stand behind their DLPs til the end (I am guessing so they can save some $$).
There is a Samsung LN55A950 available if you are sold on Samsung LCDs like I am. If price is not a huge factor this is as good as it gets in the Samsung line of LCDs.
LN55A950 (http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=televisions&type=televisions&subtype=lcdtv&model_cd=LN55A950D1FXZA)
The best price I have seen is $4100 from vanns.com (http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/462292497/samsung-ln55a950?s_c=site_search) Check out www.pricespider.com for more information on where the price has been on this one.
If you are okay with Plasma, which has come a long way from the old days, there is a plasma from Samsung that is larger PN63A650 (http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=televisions&type=televisions&subtype=plasmatv&model_cd=PN63A650T1FXZA) that may fit your needs. It is $3458 on amazon.com right now. That is as big as it gets in Samsung for plasma.

I am full of envy if you get any of these!! :worship: I am holding out for the LN46A650 to go on sale around $1200 to $1300 again.
Good Luck!
