I found this... pretty easy way to save $2.00 when getting directory assistance from your cell phone. Just send your question as a text message, ex. "pizza chicago" or "pizza 60608" to the number 2SNAP (27627) and you'll get the results back in seconds.

They also offer the option to connect the call for free. Since text messages only cost like 5 cents it's much cheaper than calling 411. Pretty easy... as long as you're not driving at the time, in which case it can be tough to text! They also do like horoscopes and pick-up lines and stuff: http://upsnap.com

And google and yahoo have this as well...

I also like this service:

This is the best thing since sliced bread!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1-800-FREE-411 or 800-373-3411 revolutionizes the 411 (directory assistance) marketplace by offering consumers a FREE alternative to the high cost service provided by traditional carriers. In addition, FREE411.COM on the Internet provides consumers with an easy to use Web-based destination for telephone number lookups. National and local merchants sponsor this service with a 12-second audio jingle about their services, which are played to consumers at the point they make a 411 request for a business in their category.

You can also have them put the call thru for free if you do not have a pen and paper handy when you are on a cell phone.

Jingle Networks, Inc.

Check out the info at both of these sites:

Similar to 411 directory assistance, but this one is for FREE.

link-
http://www.free411.com/

This is what they say on their website:
Did you know that consumers pay an average of $1.25 each time they dial 411? Sometimes, the per-call price is as high as $3.49! With 1-800-FREE411, you can stop wasting your money when it could be FREE.

When you call 1-800-FREE411, you’ll discover top-rated local businesses, hear exclusive special offers, and get connected to businesses free of charge – all at the push of a button.

Search the Internet
If you prefer to search online for residential or business listings, FREE411.com offers you the most accurate data on the Internet. Most phone data on most phone number search web sites is at least 90 days old. But phone carriers make 400,000 updates to directory assistance every day and FREE411.com uses the same, real time data that the carriers use. It costs us little more to bring you this service, but we think you’ll appreciate the quality.

You may want to be clear... Did you dial 1-800-free411 AND you wre charged for those calls or did you dial directory assistance and get charged. If it's the latter than ya it should be expected. If they charged you for 800-Free411 than I'd be suprised and think people would want to know.

are you talking about calling directory assisstance through your phone service provider, or are you saying the 1800 free-411 is a LOAD OF B*LLSH*T and that is where they charged you?

your explanations are terrible...

13.40 for 9 calls

I don't see how Cingular can charge you for 9 calls to directory assistance for dialing a 1-800 number...

If you called 411, then you did use their directory assistance and were charged acordingly...

If I dialed 1-800-best-buy and asked them to open a phone book and look up someones information, would the phone company charge me for directory assistance as well? (not that best buy would ever help a customer, because as we all know, we are just minor nusances that they have to 'deal with')

Unless you are complaining that you were charged in the past for using directory assistance and are now thrilled that their is a new service for free assistance...

*shurg*

Eather way, I've never used 411, and don't plan to even with a free option... Guess if I am ever in a bind I would be glad to have an option.

That is not exactly true. I happen to work for a cellular company, and a toll free number is not the same as an airtime free number. You may want to doublecheck that bill and see if you were billed airtime.

OK guys, I have to back up HamsterShaver on this... it's so annoying when people reply complaining about things because they didn't read well or think about it first...

It's pretty obvious that he got charged $13.40 by his cell phone provider for making 9 calls, and he's happy he heard about this 1-800-free411 service. His first message said:

"i got charged $15 by my provider for this bullshit

Then, when someone replied who his provider is and how much they charged, he said:

AND he posted his bill to show you it was cingular. No one ever mentioned getting charged for using 1-800-free411 for any calls. I dont know how people got confused, even though he said "by my provider" and posted his bill too!

i know, what i meant was no cellular service would charge you more than the "air time" for calling a 1-800 number. when my cellular service charges me airtime even for checking my voice mail, i wouldn't expect them to let me call a 1-800 number for free.

Don't get me wrong, I use this service, have been for about a month, but I'd say 1 out of 10 phone numbers don't work...usually out of service or fax lines...and I am not talking about small companies...for example, Circuit City in the town I wanted was a fax until I called the real 411.

If its important and you need it ASAP, 411.
If you have time to spare and don't mind getting a wrong # here and there, use this 800-411.

If you didn't request a number from 411 when you mistakenly called 411 instead of 611, call T-Mobile Customer Care at 611 and tell them you were trying to call Customer Care and accidentally called Directory Assistance. They should credit you for the $1.99 or at least give you some free minutes or something.

The only IMPORTANT number you would need would be 911, and if you need to call directory assistance to get the number for 911, then you're in trouble

But yes, it should be expected to not get the numbers right everytime, and freaking 411 has connected me to the wrong places countless times before, and i hate them not giving out the number, because the nsometimes the line is busy or gets disconnected, and i dont have a way to call them back.

I called a couple of times, no ad whatsoever. It did however use a couple of seconds to tell you how to automatically get the last number requested. It's all automated but if it doesn't understand you or have the listing, it sends you to an operator. Oh, and as for why use this when you can SMS? Not everyone has SMS. Very good free service IMO. You see, 'this' is abstract. It could be talking about his own '411' expirance or (the more obvious, as it is what this threads topic is) '1-800-free411'.

So you see, the reason for the confusion is the OP was not clear about what 'this' was pointing to...

There's a simple reason for this. Not everyone has a text messaging plan. So if you have a provider such as VZW (like I do), they'll rape you both ways - 10 cents up and 10 cents back down. That's 20 cents. Make a few 411 Google text message requests and it can add up to a few bucks.

Now by calling the 800#, as long as you don't go over the limit in terms of peak minutes, it's basically a free service. Not to mention you don't have to spend 2 hours text messaging but instead can speak, which is much more efficient.

Hamstershaver, I'm gonna add my 2 cents here. I totally got what you said. You were charged from your provider for using YOUR PROVIDER'S 411. I really don't understand what all the confusion is about.

Not to sound ignorant, but I didn't even notice that there was an ad. In fact, I called twice today and the only "ad" was for themselves, stating who they are, and it lasted about 5 seconds.

It was quick and accurate and from beginning to end took about 25 seconds.

First post. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phone companies are charging us $1.00 or more for 411 / information calls.

When you need to use 411, simply dial 1 800 FREE 411 or 1 800 373 3411
without incurring a charge at all except for the minutes required to make the call if you are using a cell phone :)

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 or more
for 411 / information calls when they don't have to.

When you need to use the 411 / information option,

simply dial 1 - 800 - FREE - 411 or 1 800 373 3411
without incurring a charge.

This is information people don't mind receiving -

Pass it on.

Works on home phone also.

I've tried a service like this before, don't know if it is this one. Checked my parents phone number, and it said would you like to connect for free. I said sure. When my bill showed up, I saw almost an $8 charge for that call. Total BS. I got the charge reversed. I'd say skip this.

lseangel
02-24-2006, 06:22 AM
I haven't had any prob with charges from this service.
My experiences:
Most of the time, I don't even hear any advertisements.
Sometimes it's a computer and sometimes it's a human that digs the number up for me.
They have been getting busy (I assume) so the option to be transferred to the number at the end of the call hasn't been available (the last 4 or 5 times I've used it, at least) so be sure to memorize or write down the number when they give it to you.
There has been a few occassions when their service has been completely down.

Heres another one: 1.800.411.6387 (1.800.411.METRO).

Or you can send a text message with the name of the person or business, along with city, and state, or a zip if you know it, to Google at 46645 and they'll send you a text back with the info, free of charge. Good if you don't feel like making a call and want the info stored somewhere instead of having to write it down or memorize.

I don't think so. Should've asked them what the fee would be. If you don't ask or have no one to ask and go ahead with the "deal" you have no one to blame but yourself.

This worked fine for me on a Saturday afternoon although I did have to keep trying a half dozen times or so ("we are busy - please redial" message).

One warning: Don't make the mistake of calling the wrong FREE number!!

I incorrectly recalled the number from memory - I had the FREE and the 411 reveresed - and I was quickly connected to "the hot line". I still need to check my phone bill to make sure a megadollar charge was not added as a result of this misdial.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I thought you all might appreciate it.

Usually, with Verizon at least, dialing information (411) costs $1.25. I recently discovered a service called 411 Metro (there are others, but 411 metro has been good so far) which is free directory assistance as long as you listen to like literally a 10-second advertisement.

The number is 1-800-411-6387 (800-411-METRO). Give it a try! :woot:

as posted above about google, you can text message a business or persons name, along with zip code or address, to GOOGL or rather 46645. examples text "mcdonalds 40229" to 46645 and google will send you info about all the mcdonalds near zip 40229. feel free to change mcdonalds or 40229 to something that suits your needs. the good part about this is, you have all the info saved in your inbox, instead of when you call and you have to remember or right down the info from a 411 number. also google gives you their phone number, address and approximate distance.

good luck

Just tried 800-411-METRO. They ran an ad before connecting me to an operator then another before giving me a number. Since I have a prepaid plan, these ads cost extra money. . .

Also, 800-FREE-411 seems to be hit or miss on finding the right number. Recently I tried getting a number for a Sheraton hotel and they gave met a number to a fax line. Just today I tried to get a number for a local restaurant and they didn't have a listing. Don't know if they have old phone books or what?

Anyone else have these problems or know of a better free information service?

Posted here and everywhere else on the web.

another free 411 is ironcially called 1-800-FREE-411 (800-373-3411)

How is "Free 411" for free 411 calls different from what one might expect? Of course, if it was "pay-4-411" and the calls where actually free, then you might label it "ironic". As it stands, the only thing ironic is that you thought you were using "ironically" correctly. Actually, that's not even true since it was to be expected that someone would label free 411 calls at 800-free-411 as "ironic". Dictionaries... They're not just for decoration ;)

Still, nice deal OP :)

as posted above about google, you can text message a business or persons name, along with zip code or address, to GOOGL or rather 46645. examples text "mcdonalds 40229" to 46645 and google will send you info about all the mcdonalds near zip 40229. feel free to change mcdonalds or 40229 to something that suits your needs. the good part about this is, you have all the info saved in your inbox, instead of when you call and you have to remember or right down the info from a 411 number. also google gives you their phone number, address and approximate distance.

good luck

especially handy :D I've used this more than I think I've used my stinkin' phone ;)

:woot:

Yeah, 1-800-555-8355.

I've used it in the past week.
My biggest usage of it is movie times on the go.

Getting directions from it can be a pain, because there are so similarly sounding streets around.

another free option is to text message google for phone numbers.

Link (http://www.google.com/sms/)

SMS Quick Start

1. Start a new text message and type in your search query

2. Send the message to the number "46645" (GOOGL)

3. You'll receive text message(s) with results

Tip: For help send the word 'help' as a text message to 46645.

I was thinking the exact same thing you were, but I wouldn't have responded nearly so pedantically and sententiously as you. Man, you really WOWed us with your exquisite placement of "to which".

I am similarly "WOWed" with your vocabulary.

In any case, I'm sure you're the type who would have pounced on me had I typed anything less grammatically proper in my original post, perhaps with something along the lines of the following: "If you're going to correct someone's grammar or usage, your post should be free of such errors itself."

"[T]o which" was "exquisitely" placed precisely for this reason. Since it was placed well, I guess the best you could do was pull out your thesaurus and ridicule how correct my grammar was.

I use 1-800-Free-411 all the time! It works from your home phone and Cell phone and the only problems I've ever had is the voice activated system doesn't always "hear" correctly. Then you just get transferred to a live person and everything is fine. I saw this posted in a computer magazine many months ago and have been using it ever since.
