There was a Hot Deal on this (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=167454&t=617947&highlight=Sony+RM) a few weeks ago for $18 shipped, but missed out. Found them on ebay selling for $20-$50.
Read all the reviews, but for $21, said WTH and was prepared for the worst. Loaded the software on the laptop in front of the TV, gathered up all the remotes. Except for 1 remote, Onkyo HTS, RM-AX1400 had all the codes. However, on the Sony DVD player, only the basic functions worked and I ended up manually assigning around 10 advanced keys. This will let you program up to 16 components and/or Xpress functions. For example, if you have 6 components, you can create 10 Xpress functions. You can also program functions of a different remote to an alternate using an "alias", for example, Volume keys on DVD can be set to control Volume on your receiver. Once you have all the programming done, you download to the Remote using the supplied USB cable.
Xpress functions are macros that you organize based on activities. Watch DVD, for example, you program the remote to, 1) Turn on DVD player, 2) Open disc tray, 3) Turn on Monitor, 4) Select DVD input, 5) Turn on Receiver, 6) Select DVD input, 7) Close tray on DVD player, and 8) Play. It took about an hour to set up all the functions but afterwards, I was a happy camper. Xpress functions are awesome, I love the ability to customize macros endlessly.
You need to have all the original remotes in order to utilize all the functions of the original remote. I suppose for those without the original remote, unless the RM-AX1400 has the codes for those lost remotes, this will not work for you. Overall, extremely satisfied with the product. It is a lot bigger than most remotes (2x10x1"), but not unruly, and it feels like an expensive product.
