Saw this Discover Companion deal posted in the NY Times:

Has anyone actually signed up to it? - I'm not sure how good the deal really is - it seems you have to spend quite a lot to get anything out of it, and there's black-out days where you can't travel.

I've spoken to Discover Customer Services and Affinion Customer services and they're both saying different things, so I don't know what to believe!

I travel to Chicago a lot from NY, so if it's actually a good deal, I may go for it - but talking to them has made be a bit cynical about the whole thing.

Anyone? confused??!

I saw the ad in a magazine and signed up for the Discover Miles card with free companion tickets for a year! We will be traveling a lot this year and decided it would be best for us to add this card, despite it bringing down our credit reports due to another account opened and also length of average open accounts.

I've now contacted discover each month for the past 5 months inquiring as to when I will receive the "package" containing all the information on how to get those free companion tickets. The promotion ended last week, I called again tonight. Except this time, the rep informed me that at the time of signup, apparently the "code" that was entered was for 1,000 miles each month for a year, NOT free companion tickets. WTF! And no, they cannot change it at this point.

THIS IS FRAUD - the old bait and switch routine. I hope the FTC gets in on this one...with so many companies going under, and I have been a loyal Discover card fan for years, decades...I hate to say this ploy for new business really brings them to sewer levels. THIS "DEAL" STINKS!

I did get a companion travel card, and it does come with restrictions:

1. You have to register the card at a web site within 90 days of getting it.
2. The person who's name it is registered in must be one of the two travelers.
3. Once registered, you have 1 year to use it.
4. Travel must be booked through www.companionbooking.com
5. Travel may only be between their selected list of continental US airports, which appears to be just the major hubs
6. 14 day advance purchase, return travel within 30 days
7. There may be blackouts during holidays, etc.

I am still within the 90 day period of registering, so that my 1 year is maximixed. But this deal is not as great as I would have liked. Also, since travel must be purchased through them, who knows what the real price of the "free" ticket is.

As for the card itself, the "miles" deal is 1 mile for each dollar spent, and more miles if you shop through the Discover website, etc. Then, you can trade blocks of 10,000 miles for $100 credit back on any travel purchases made with the card within the last 90 days. There are other redemption offers (like $50 cash for 10,000 miles), but at best it appears to be a 1% money back card (but only on travel). I feel my classic discover card is better.
