I really would like to eliminate my phone bill. My plan was to use comcast internet and some type of voip. At first I was going to buy Ooma (http://www.ooma.com) but it's $250 up-front.... Then I stumbled across http://www.magicjack.com. Anyone have any experience with them? Site looks kinda cheesy...... It's $39.99 for the hardware + 1 year of service. After that it's $19.99 per year.
search the hot deals section. there is a long thread about magic jack there, started months ago

Did not work and got poor canned "chat" service responses. They went back on a clarified promise and didn't care. Before you think it was my system. MJ didn't work even with my system off and an in coming caller tries to leave a message (on THEIR) system.
Funny thing is, I was going to bite the bullet on a 5 year extension with them, in order to support their effort and they couldn't even get that right! So, I dropped them like a hammer. It was all a waste of time. Either they couldn't keep up with demand and/or some funny business is going on in the telecom industry. Of course now, they are reluctant to return my money. Good thing I bought with Visa(in this kind of case.)

Yes, MJ is a waste of time. The best VOIP Providers out there are currently Skype, and IConnectHere. My parents use IConnectHere and have for a few years, the connection is always good and their customer support is excellent. Not to mention the good rates, as low as half a penny a minute.

I'd have to second the comments from goldxtrade. I had used SkypeOut for nearly a year and decided to give MagicJack a try. While sometimes it did work ok, other times it was just completely useless. The person on the other end could only hear half or less than half of what I was saying. I did all the usual stuff they suggested (which was just the same canned stuff over and over again) and eventually go frustrated and went back to Skype. Skype's quality is better on a whole and works much more consistently.

Awesome. Going for the 5 year plan.
People that don't have a good MJ connection, don't have a good pc/connection.
Either that or they have a firewall and all sorts of other antivirus crap running in the background, and when it doesn't work flawlessly, it must be the MJ ! :)

I just hooked it up yesterday. I had Vonage for almost a year and I believe this is a better value for basically the same features.
