Saw the ads in our local newspapers about these Fake Fireplaces that emit heat.

Anyone buy one of these and can comment on the quality and the ultimate cost with shipping?

thanks.

my local costco sells these things, i think they are around $500-600...but i am not sure...if you have a card, go check it out...

but many manufactures make them, so we really can't tell you how much the ultimate cost is with shipping because we don't know what ads were in your local newspaper...

they always advertise them in the Parade Magazine in the sunday paper. They look cool. I used to work in Amish Country and no one used those heaters though!

I love how they say you can get 2 "free" but I'm sure there's a catch somewhere....

The outside wood is crafted by the Amish according to what I got from the the commercials. Looks like composite to me. :shake:

Ad is somehow misleading, It's electric and "uses no more electricity than a coffee maker" but can "quickly heat from wall to wall."

The Amish make the box it goes into. The heater uses electricity. No idea how well it works. :dontknow:

I have seen some that actually use that canned heat. Would this be one of those?

Isn't selling amish fireplaces on the Internet kind of an oxymoron...?

A couple of red flags here: Coffee makers use more electricity than what people think. A small space heater can use the same amount of electricity as a coffee maker

In the ad, it shows a photograph of the Amish working. As far as I know, Amish do not like to be photographed, and do their best to avoid being photographed.

To me the ad is mis-leading. It makes it look like Amish people invented and use this product. It also makes it look like by buying one of these, one is doing charity for the Amish. Kind of in an exploitive way. The ad doesn't give enough detail how this heater works. Also, this ad is in the paper all the time, and it leads one to believe it is a one time offer.

You're talking about the "Heat Surge", right? I was curious about those, too. I found this article online, doesn't sound so great. http://www.alternativeconsumer.com/2007/12/09/heat-surge-fireplace-whats-up-with-that/

Was at a relative's for the holidays and saw one of these. Nifty but 8 cents an hour cost? I highly doubt it.

I've seen these advertisements. They look extremely tacky to me and the thought of a bunch of "Amish" boys working in a modern factory for $8/hour takes away some of the "amish-appeal" (if there was any to begin with).

These "Amish" heaters are just fancy electric space heaters (http://www.wcpo.com/content/news/localshows/dontwasteyourmoney/story/EdenPure-Other-Space-Heaters-Tested/PdondT-tOkKTOuXc3gCxLw.cspx). If you live where electricity is cheaper than oil or gas, or you don't mind keeping warm only the room you are using, you might save. But enough to cover the several hundred dollars these things will set you back? I doubt it; better to get a good-quality one for under $100.

Please keep in mind that the Amish have imposed a limit of two per household due to high demand.

These commercials are great. I love how the "Amish" are gently tapping the nails into what looks like very cheap composite wood.

Let's stay focused here. If you want a good electric space heater that does not look ridiculous, there are many sites which review these things.

I believe the Amish are doing heavy recruiting right now to meet demand. My mom stated this may be some sort of government program, but that seemed a bit far fetched.

I laugh every time I see the commercial for these. There are so many wrong things in it. Amish don't allow themselves to be photographed, yet here they are on a commercial and in a newspaper ad. Amish don't use electricity, I guess the only money they get is for the wood work they did for the item. I don't see a difference between one of these and a regular electric heater. If you really want to save money on heat, just get a wood stove. Keeps you active chopping, splitting, and carrying wood.... and you get free heat.
