Looks like a good deal, pretty much get the dock for free. Anyone know how reliable this model of Seagate is?

Good price...I have to admit I'm a little scared off by the reviews, though. I have a pair of Seagate 1T drives, and I haven't had any problems, but there are so many "click-of-death" reviews I think I'll wait for a similar deal on a Samsung, which has surprisingly high reviews.

The reviews at NewEgg basically told you that the reliability of this drive is BAD.

I've tried to steer clear of Seagate, but got a 160 GB cheap ($40 AR long ago) for the computer I'm using now with no problems after 5 years of almost constant use.

Statistically, however, they're worse than my two favorites:

Wester Digital
Hitachi

I had an IBM SCSI HDD way back when their reputation was mud and it crashed within a year.

Search for "hard drive dependability" and see if you can find stats... play the odds!

Got one last week for $109.99. Think I can get a credit for the difference?

Newegg will usually adjust the price... YMMV depending on the CSR you get

Ouch. I guess sometimes there is a reason for big sales.

I have no experience with this model or any Seagate internal; but I've owned a 1TB by them for about a year now, no problems at all. I know a friend who also owns at least one, with similar success.

I've used a few of these model drives in very light use for the past year or so, no problems...yet.
Frankly -- listen up -- you're FRAKKING INSANE in this day and age if you 'trust' ANY drive to be reliable
to the extent that you're going to lose important data/work if -- no -- not if -- WHEN -- the drive dies. The drive WILL die, and Murphy's law says it'll be at the most inconvenient time. For $60-$140 for a 1-2TB drive these days, there's just no good excuse for not buying TWO and keeping a periodic backup on the second drive and just physically turning it off / disconnecting it (e.g. an external eSATA / USB drive/dock/whatever) when you're not doing a backup.

1TB is just TOO much to risk losing. So WHAT if the drive has a good reputation? Will that make you feel better when your data is lost? So WHAT if it has a long warranty? Yeah they'll replace the drive with a second hand replacement after 4 weeks delay and probably $20 shipping/handling costs. You're not getting your data back. They won't "fix" the drive with your data on it. So ... yeah get a drive with a good reputation, but that's just a value judgement on the best competitive deal. Assume it WILL fail whatever you buy.

EDIT: Oh yeah and newegg doesn't have the best packing quality when shipping bare drives. It CAN be good, but often it is not so good. They seem to do better when you're ordering a LOT of stuff at once so the box will be nice and big with lots of padding material etc. But otherwise just for ordering one or two drives.. they could just be thrown in there in a bag and with some bubble wrap around them which is not great given how UPS / Fedex basically drops, throws, and kick-boxes your packages during sorting and handling. I'd trust "retail kit" packaging more, and buying a boxed retail kit at a local retailer (where you can easily inspect the condition of the box and more easily return any defective drive) moreso.

Frys occasionally sells these for like $79-$89-$99 for the drive in retail kit packaging on sale at their B&M stores and occasionally for $99 +S/H or so online.

Takes like 12+ hours to do an extended SMART scan on one of these, and if you're going to run multiple extended SMART tests and maybe a few MHDD SCAN passes you better plan on doing nothing with them for 2-3 days after you get them in and install them in a test PC.
